NOTICE

[thoughts]> 14:50:06

Just in case anybody is reading this website...

I am in the process of transfering the vurt.co.uk domain and the contents of this website to a new host. As a result of this, the site may be inaccessible or flaky for a day or two. My email is also probably going to be affected, so please be patient if you are trying to contact me.

Sodding Weather

arse.

I brought my camera and tripod in to work with me today, with the intention of popping out at lunchtime to do a bit of photography around twickenham. Of course by the time I go to get my lunch it has become really dull and overcast, then shortly after that it starts pissing it down with rain.

and now? bright and failry sunny of course. bugger.

I seem destined never to use the nice colour Fuji film I have bought.

Goals

[thoughts]> 10:19:47

There are a number of things I want to do with my life, but I currently don’t have the time/ability/motivation to get off my arse and do something about them.

I am currently experiencing a great number of creative urges that I really want to do something about but I don’t know where to start. My mind is flitting about from one idea to another and I can’t decide where to start. I fear that if I don’t record my ideas, then I will never get around to realising them.

Anyway, here is a list of things I currently want to achieve, in no particular order:

* Write a book/novel/collection of short stories
* Draw a comic strip
* Take more photographs - learn to develop and print my own
* Learn to play my guitar properly - lessons!
* Develop a computer game - I have a text adventure in progress and have ideas for an action game.
* Get my libretto running a stripped down version of BSD (currently NetBSD) and use it for writing/developing
* Build a parafoil kite, preferably quad line
* Learn to fly quad line kite
* Be a great father - without becoming frozen with fear at the prospect of being responsible for a new tiny life.
* probably more things as well, I just can’t remember them at the moment

I am filled with this creative passion that I have to do something about before I explode. I don’t know where this has come from, all I know is that if I don’t do something about it, I’m going to regret it forever and hate myself for being the lazy, tv-watching slob that I am. I have (had) a really keen mind and I feel that it is just getting wasted. I need something new to stimulate and challenge me.

home furnishing

[thoughts]> 13:45:35

With the baby on the way, Cate has gone into super-nesting mode. The outcome of this is that I have been doing an amazing amount of DIY recently, and have the injuries to prove it :-)

Our lounge is now almost completely finished, I just need to put up the curtain rail so taht we can have curtains instead of cardboard to prevent prying eyes. I alos need to paint the ceiling around the light fixture, but I have a feeling that may be forgotten for a few months...

Of course when decorating a room, it is inevitable that the subject of new furniture will raise its fashionable-and-certainly-more-attractive-than-what-you-currently-have head. Since we haven’t decorated the lounge since we moved in two and a half years ago, we have gone for a complete overhaul furniture wise.

Our lounge is now like that scene from “Fight Club”, and I don’t mean illegal-fighting-den chic. Everything has come from Ikea or Habitat and it is a vision of light birch wood, cream, grey and the odd bit of chocolate suede. Lovely. no, really it is very nice. It’s certainly a lot better than the dirty orange it was before.

We now have a nice arrangement of Billy bookcases forming a mini-library in the corner. We have a springy Poang chair with matching footstool. And we have a very comfortable but totally unpronouncable grey wool sofa.

The best buy has to be the table we found at Ikea. In it’s normal mode, it is a small square table that tucks nicely into the alcove and would easily seat the four (if we had chairs). However the table top rotates and unfoldes to double the size of the tabl allowing us to seat 6 people, all for the extra cheap price of £85! (That is cheap for a table, especially considering an identical table from Habitat or John Lewis would cost £235).

Unfortunately, Ikea did not have any chairs that we liked, so we decided to get just the table and find chairs elsewhere.
Except we can’t.
Well, we can find chairs that we like, it’s just that chairs on their own cost almost the same as the table did, if not more. And that just feels _wrong_. I mean, when you spend £85 on a table, spending £70 per chair is just too much for my money-grubbing brain to cope with.

So currently, we have a very nice little table siting in the corner of our lounge, but we sit on the sofa and rest our plates on our knees to eat. Hurrah!

email

[thoughts]> 10:01:59

Well, it looks as though the problem was with my ISP rather than with me :-)

Anyway, I am now able to receive email again. Yay!

eMail problems

[thoughts]> 09:02:57

Hmm, I appear to have exceeded my mail quota so I am temporarily unable to receive any email from my ISP.

If you are trying to send me an email, please hold off for an hour or so, by which time I should have everything sorted.

Huge Blister

[thoughts]> 10:52:40

I have a huge blister on my thumb!

It makes typing an interesting exercise.

perhaps_should_avoid_using_the_spacebar?

maybe not. ouch.

How did I obtain this blister you ask? Well last night I made a start at removing the dado rail from my living room in preparation for painting.

The act of removing the filler hiding the screws in the rail using another screw resulted in the 1.5cm blister on my thumb.

Perhaps I should have used a more suitable tool?

Death!

[thoughts]> 17:45:33

Yay! Incurable Pneumonia epidemic!

All our pension problems are solved!

Oh wait, it kills anybody? Shit.

Hmm, Today is beginning to feel a little like a “Choose your own adventure” book.

You can either:

1) Die at the hands of a terrorist attack resulting from the impending Iraq war (page 52.)
2) Suffocate slowly as a result of the super-pneumonia (page 32.)
3) Shoot yourself now and get it over with (page 85.)

The choice is yours...

War

[thoughts]> 16:18:13

Okay, so there isn’t going to be a second UN resolution, so America and Britain will go in anyway!

Fantastic.

Moron George W. Bush is expected to make an announcement around 0100 GMT stating that Saddam Hussein must leave Iraq or face the full wrath of the U.S. and it’s stationary aircraft carrier Britain.

Time to retire to the unused Millenium shelter at the bottom of the garden...
